Vel R Phillips School

The Vel R. Phillips School Community helps students realize a successful future. We foster restorative practices so students build communication skills and positive relationships with peers, adults, and themselves. We use best practices and model lifelong learning so students gain academic confidence. We help students to intentionally plan for and realize their goals.

Description

VEL’S VISION: Our vision is to establish Vel R. Phillips School as a humanizing and healing setting where all students increase their academic skills and can build their abilities in maintaining and repairing relationships. This will help them transition from Vel to a more successful and stable future of their own making.

Volunteers can work in small groups or 1:1 with students in the art/social emotional learning classroom, provide assistance with supply/materials preparation, act as overall classroom support (extra set of hands), deliver micro-lessons, deliver warm ups/Daily Doodles, assist with design and installation of art exhibitions, design event flyers, design art history jeopardy, design unit/artist spotlight posters, and more.

Our school is located within the Vel R Phillips Juvenile Justice Center, on the west side of the city. Volunteers must have transportation or be comfortable using public transit. Patience and kindness are key!

Background checks are required for all volunteers. Volunteers will need to visit the facility prior to committing to this opportunity.

Volunteer shifts: 8:00am - 3:00pm M-F. Some remote hours available on student's own time.
