Friends of the Domes
The Friends of the Domes mission is to promote and support the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory (The Domes) and surrounding park by creating and enhancing the visitor experience of this globally significant urban destination. By sharing our appreciation and understanding of habitats that sustain our world, we foster an environment where everyone can experience unique worldwide plant collections in a natural setting.

• This opportunity is reserved for visual art students in or near Milwaukee County with no limits related to age, sex, or nationality.
• One volunteer requested with ability to commit to a weekly 3-hour volunteer shift onsite on the same weekday (timing is flexible between 9:00 am – 3:00 pm) throughout the semester.
• Entrants shall be knowledgeable in one or more of the following artistic areas of focus: Painting; Sculpture and installation; and/or Scenic and Prop Design and build.
• A volunteer will be asked to devote at least 3 hours of time each week to assisting create various types of art works.
• Please digitally submit 5 to 10 photos of your work which you feel best reflects your skill sets. Links to your digital resume, portfolio and/or website are welcome.
• If a student plans to complete a project digitally, they will need to bring a computer/tablet with them to the Domes.
The student volunteer will participate in the process of creating a public art exhibition on display in the historical Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, aka “The Domes”. This call is for a student artist to directly assist the Exhibit Designer in developing conceptual ideas pertaining to the show themes and creating artwork for each show out of a multitude of materials. The final works will be installed into the exhibition space consisting of a 250 sq ft sand bed with living plants growing around the final artistic installations.
A volunteer will be asked to devote at least 3 hours of time each week to assisting create various types of art works. Tasks can range from: researching topics and developing theme concepts, various graphic design work, variety of sculpture building techniques, painting, installing, maintaining props, and organizing materials, etc. The volunteer should be ready to take instruction and work independently on a task. Ideally the volunteer would have a keen eye for details and aim for clean execution of finishing work.
The Exhibit Designer and the student will initially meet for one hour to orient the student to environment & expectations, as well as determine more specifics regarding current art projects. Each week, the student will check in to arrange tasks for that week as well as updating the progress of their project.
